A check valve (also known as a non-return valve) is a passive flow control device designed to allow fluid to flow in only one direction and prevent backflow. Its operation depends entirely on the pressure differential of the fluid itself—no external actuation devices (such as handles or motors) are required. When the forward flow pressure exceeds the reverse pressure (such as back pressure or spring force), the internal mechanism of the valve (such as disc, ball or swing gate) opens to allow fluid passage. When the fluid reverses or stops flowing, the mechanism closes automatically to seal the pipeline and prevent backflow that may cause equipment damage, fluid contamination or system operation interruption.
Common check valve structures include:
  • Swing Check Valve: Adopts a hinged disc, which swings open during forward flow and closes by gravity or back pressure.
  • Single Plate Check Valve: A type of swing check valve with an integrated single disc hinged to the valve body, sealed by disc gravity and back pressure, optional with weight/spring for quick closing.
  • Dual Plate Check Valve: A compact wafer-type swing check valve with two split discs hinged to the central shaft, equipped with a spring for fast closing, sealed by spring force and back pressure, no external weight required.
  • Ball Check Valve: Uses a spherical ball to press against the orifice to prevent reverse flow.
  • Spring-loaded Check Valve: Built-in spring assists closing, ensuring fast sealing even at low pressure.

2. Definition and Working Principle of Dual Plate Check Valve


A dual plate check valve, also known as a double disc check valve, is a non-return valve widely used in industrial fluid handling systems to prevent backflow of liquids, gases or vapors. Featuring a compact structure and efficient operation, it has become the preferred product for pipelines with limited space and low pressure drop requirements.
The core design of a dual plate check valve is that two lightweight semi-circular discs are installed on a central hinge pin inside the valve body. Different from traditional swing check valves that rely on a single large disc, these two smaller discs work together to control the flow direction. When the medium flows forward, the pressure pushes the two discs open, allowing fluid to pass with minimal resistance. Compared with other types of check valves, this design significantly reduces the pressure drop across the valve and helps improve the overall efficiency of the pipeline system. When the fluid stops flowing or reverses, the weight of the discs combined with the backflow pressure forces them to close quickly against the seat, forming a tight seal to prevent backflow.

The dual-plate structure eliminates the need for a large swing space, making its length much shorter than that of a swing check valve of the same nominal diameter. In addition, the lightweight discs enable faster closing speed, effectively mitigating water hammer—a common destructive phenomenon in pipelines caused by sudden valve closure. This fast closing capability protects pumps, pipelines and other equipment from pressure surges and extends their service life.


4. Material Selection and Applicable Standards


Dual plate check valves are manufactured with various materials to meet different application requirements. The valve body is usually made of carbon steel, stainless steel (such as ASTM A351 CF8M or F316) or ductile iron, while the discs and seats can be made of PTFE, Viton, RPTFE, stainless steel and other materials according to the corrosiveness, temperature and pressure of the medium being handled. It is designed in compliance with international standards such as API 594, ASME B16.34 and ISO 14313, ensuring compatibility and reliability in global industrial fields.


5. Application Fields and Scenarios


Dual plate check valves have a wide range of applications. They are widely used in oil and gas pipelines, chemical processing plants, water treatment facilities, power generation systems and HVAC systems. For example, in oil refineries, they are installed in crude oil transmission pipelines to prevent backflow when pumps are shut down; in chemical plants, they can handle corrosive fluids with corrosion-resistant material options; in water supply systems, they ensure that water flows only in the predetermined direction and protect municipal infrastructure from backflow damage.
